John Plumtree hails SA’s black rugby talent

Hurricanes coach John Plumtree has hailed the amount of talented black rugby players South Africa has been able to produce, saying the country’s Super Rugby teams are shaping up to be difficult to beat because of the talent at their disposal.

The former SA Sevens coach has vast knowledge of the local rugby landscape, having spent close to a decade playing for the Sharks before returning in a coaching capacity after a stint in his native New Zealand.

Speaking after masterminding the Hurricanes’ convincing win away to the Lions over the weekend, the 53-year-old touched on the player drain which has affected both the Kiwis and South Africa.

Ngidi to return for crunch World Cup clash with Afghanistan

Proteas skipper Faf Du Plessis confirmed that seamer Lungi Ngidi would be fit to return to action for South Africa’s match against Afghanistan over the weekend.

The Proteas have made an abominable start to the Cricket World Cup losing their three opening games before a washout against the West Indies on Monday gave the side their first points.

With other matches rained-off already in the tournament, the Proteas still have some faint hopes of reaching the semi-finals, but will need to win all five of their remaining fixtures and hope other results go their way.

Ross-Dillon Player and Oswald Smith claimed an incredible South African 1-2 finish at the Red Bull Megaloop at Zandvoort.

Ross-Dillon Player and compatriot Oswald Smith did South Africa proud at the Red Bull Megaloop Kite Surfing event in Zandvoort on Saturday.

Organizers have waited two years for the conditions to align perfectly to allow 16 kiteboarders to show off their biggest megaloops in the most extreme weather conditions.

Tayler Scott becomes the second South African to play Major League Baseball

Johannesburg-born Tayler Scott has become just the second South African to play Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States.

Scott was promoted from minor league Tacoma on Friday to reinforce the Seattle Mariners bullpen, and he made his debut relieving Yusei Kikuchi during the fourth inning of Saturday’s game against the Anaheim Angels, he went 2 2/3 innings allowing four hits and three runs with a single walk and four strikeouts.

Utility infielder Gift Ngoepe was the first ever South African to play MLB turning out for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays, while the 29-year-old currently plays Triple-A ball with the Phillies.
