It’s the start of a new month for South Africans, but they are being faced with the same old story: The cost of living is increasing, even if our wages aren’t. Municipal rates across the country are going up on Monday 1 July, and the changes will affect millions in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and many other city-dwellers.

Cost of living on the rise

Of course, the term “tariff hike” has become synonymous with Eskom. Their plans to start charging residents more came to fruition on Monday as well. Water and Sanitation Minister Gugile Nkwinti on Wednesday welcomed the Southern African Development Community (SADC) ministers to a water and energy summit taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

In his welcome address, Nkwinti said: “It has become critically clear that our region requires industrial development underpinned by solid infrastructure. The recent drought has exposed this weakness in the region. Water and energy continue to play a significant role in regional economic growth, and access to [the] same [services] has a direct impact on the quality of the lives of our people. Energy and water are fundamental enablers to economic development, [...]

Kenya: Rain, Rain, Rain Everywhere, But No Water Is Being Harvested

Nairobians are questioning why rain water is not being harvested in dams to offer reprieve during the constant water rationings.

Those on Twitter shared videos of the floods and illustrations on how the run-off water could be harvested.

Some however stated the need for the run-off water to be purified urging Nairobians not to litter so as to have harvestable water.

The Meteorological Department on Monday issued a floods warning to Nairobi residents.

FLOODING

Some of the areas named as likely to experience flooding are South C Shopping Centre, Mathare, Huruma, Loresho, Muthangari and the Kileleshwa Ring Road interchange.
