ANC TAKES EARLY LEAD AS RESULTS START TRICKLING IN

It will still be more than 48 hours before South Africans know the final results.

Nationally, the African National Congress (ANC) is enjoying an early lead followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

By 4am on Thursday morning, 887,867 valid votes had been captured.

Party agents sat anxiously with their eyes fixed to their computer screens and monitors showing the early votes.

The ANC has taken an early lead at just over 50% nationally followed by the DA and EFF at 28% and 7%, respectively.

In the Western Cape, the DA was sitting on 60% of the vote so far.

POLICE WON’T HESITATE TO ACT AGAINST VOTING DISRUPTIONS, WARNS TOP COP

 Officers are on high alert in areas identified as hotspots, particularly in Vuwani in Limpopo, Soweto and areas in KwaZulu-Natal as well as the North West.

In Potchefstroom, in Ikageng an empty ballot box was also set alight.

Sitole said that police would not hesitate to act.

“If any incident occurs, as police, we respond immediately because we’ve made a commitment to the nation that would have a safe election.”

Every polling station will see at least two police officers – double the number will be deployed to medium to low-risk stations, while high-risk stations will have six officers present.

HARARE RESIDENTS HAIL FIRST VIOLENCE FREE ELECTION

Many of the city’s residents are still sceptical that this means the opposition party will win Monday’s election.

Nearby, Zanu-PF, the party that has ruled Zimbabwe since independence in 1980 also held a rally. One thing is certain: for the first time since independence — the end of white-minority rule — Robert Mugabe will not be the president after an election.
