This invention is helping to tackle Africa’s food waste problem

At their workshop in a Kampala suburb, Lawrence Okettayot and his business partner, both in their mid-20s, drilled holes and screws into a steel-lined, green wooden box designed to dry food in an eco-friendly way.

Their invention, a low-tech thermal dehydrator, can be used to process fruits like mango, banana and pineapple, as well as vegetables such as okra and eggplant, to stop them spoiling.

It uses heat from briquettes made of discarded paper and other natural materials, including garden waste.

Food waste is a big challenge in Africa, with about half of crops lost due to poor harvesting techniques and handling afterwards, according to the U.N. Food and [...]

Engineered in Africa: ‘We knew the talent was there’

Christina Sass learned at an early age to spot talent in new places. She went on to found Andela, a firm that recruits software engineers in Africa.

One autumn, at the start of a new school term, she found half of her class had been replaced with black students from a much less affluent part of town.

“Busing” children between schools was a policy designed to integrate divided communities, and she remembers it causing “a huge uproar” in the US city of Athens, Georgia where she was growing up.

She was fearful at first herself, but the experience turned out to be overwhelmingly positive.

“Sure, it was a bunch of new people who [...]

The Africa Cup of Nations 2019 is in full swing. And with football comes comedy football and you won’t see anything more horrendous than this today. Well, we hope not…

Against Uganda, with the scores at 1-1, Knowledge Musona from Zimbabwe did something rather awful. The poor guy. The Warriors lost their opening match and were up against a Ugandan side who snuck a win over Congo DR and topped Group A in the process.

So, a win was far more important than a draw. And, when a chance presents itself, you have to take it.

But Zim’s captain had a rough night out.

Musona hit the crossbar from five yards out and with an open goal in front of him. Seriously. It was [...]

Smart drug locker wins top African prize

An invention by a South African engineer that keeps secure and then dispenses pills to patients has won a major African engineering prize.

Neo Hutiri, 31, was announced as the winner of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s 2019 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, in the Ugandan capital, Kamapla, on Tuesday evening.

Mr Hutiri had to present his invention, along with three other finalists, to a panel of judges and an audience who then voted for what they thought was the best innovation.

Along with a medal, the engineer and his team have won $32,000 (£25,000).

Mr Hutiri’s invention, the Pelebox, “is a simple wall of lockers, controlled by a [...]
