Spat over toll roads in South Africa shows poor people don’t count

The invisibility of poor people in the country, who are estimated to make up 55,5% of the population, was on display recently as David Makhura, Premier of Gauteng Province, the country’s economic heartland, and the Minister of Finance, Tito Mboweni, aired their differences on Twitter.

The topic was the electronic tolling (known locally as e-tolls) of freeways in Gauteng. The Gauteng African National Congress (ANC), which Makhura leads, has responded to a backlash against the tolls by urging that they be removed.

The firm has identified the region as a target for [...]

In a tough industry dominated by men, the women are changing attitudes.

“What men can do, women can also do,” said Asumadu-Amoah, who hopes other women will be inspired by their achievement. “It’s (a question of) determination.”

Ladybird’s all-women team drive 47 000-litre trucks, delivering fuel to Ghana’s gold mines.

But for [...]

DURBAN’S NEW TAXI INITIATIVE GOES LIVE

The face of Durban’s public transport changed this week with the launch 150 branded minibus taxis in the city centre that will offer commuter an enhanced service as part of the city’s ambitious GO!Durban project.

The eThekwini Municipality’s mini-bus taxi incentive programme, called “Moja Cruise” kicked off on Monday after months of behind the scenes collaboration between the Ethekwini Metro Taxi Council (EMTC) – the leadership body of the mini-bus taxi industry – and the city.

The roll-out of the 150 taxis part of an innovative pilot programme to “test the waters” for improved public transport system. The programme branded “Moja Cruise” [...]
