SPRINGBOKS SLUMP TO SEVENTH IN WORLD RANKINGS

The Springboks have dropped to No 7 in the World Rugby rankings following their 22-20 defeat against Wales in Washington DC on Saturday.

South Africa were ranked sixth before this one-off Test, sandwiched between fifth-placed Scotland and Wales in seventh.

However, the two-point loss to Wales sees the Springboks docked 1.04 rating points from 83.81 to 82.77 and relegated to seventh.

Wales gained a 1.04 points increase, enough to climb two places from seventh to fifth, above South Africa and Scotland.

The rest of the top 10 remain unchanged.

Players called up for Bok assessments

A group of 12 Springboks have been invited to a four-day training, assessment and conditioning camp, from October 23-26 in Cape Town.  Current Springbok squad members who are playing for their provinces in the Currie Cup playoffs, as well as those who are playing for clubs in England and Japan, were not considered for the camp.

The purpose of the camp is to give Springbok management first-hand opportunity to assess the medical, conditioning and fitness status of the selected group as the Springboks step up their preparations for the end-of-year-tour.

Boks ‘hungry’ to bounce back for Wallabies contest

Springboks backline coach Franco Smith says the manner in which the South Africans bounce back on Saturday against the Wallabies would demonstrate the character of the current team.

Speaking to media at the team hotel in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, Smith said a vital part of the Springboks’ turnaround strategy this coming weekend will be to prioritise and protect possession against a quality Wallabies side in Bloemfontein.

Smith said an analysis of their heavy loss in Albany showed they have to be more accurate when it comes to holding onto the ball.

Two years until Rugby World Cup 2019!

Today (Wednesday, September 20) marks exactly two years until the start of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

The tournament will be hosted by Japan and will run from September 20, 2019 until November 2, 2019.

The Springboks have been drawn alongside the All Blacks in Pool B for the tournament. The Boks will also play against Italy in the pool stages, as well as a yet-to-be-determined Africa 1 team and the Repechage winner.

So far, 15 of the 20 nations have been confirmed. The final teams will only be confirmed following the continental qualification process, which will be fully completed in November 2018.
