PROTEAS START ODI WITH A WIN: THANKS TO BOWLERS

Some consolation for a disappointing tour they claimed four wickets each to help bowl out Sri Lanka for 193, a total the visitors passed in just 31 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

South Africa’s chase depended on an 86-run third-wicket stand between Quinton de Kock and skipper Faf du Plessis, who both hit 47.

Off spinner Akila Dananjaya struck at crucial moments to get three wickets but Jean-Paul Duminy ensured a swift chase with his 32-ball unbeaten 53.

Wales gained a 1.04 points increase, enough to climb two places from seventh to fifth, above South Africa and Scotland.

The rest of the top 10 remain unchanged.

It was no surprise when the season’s first yellow card went to a Jaguares player – fullback Joaquin Tuculet was sent to the sin-bin in the 26th minute of his side’s clash against the Stormers at Newlands.

The Argentine side’s discipline has left much to be desired since their introduction into the tournament in 2016 and the happenings at Newlands on Saturday suggested that not much will change this season.

The Stormers were themselves guilty of giving away silly penalties and hooker Ramone Samuels’ 64th minute yellow [...]

A game of numbers erupted between the two men who are likely to play significant but differing roles when Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns meet in a mouthwatering Absa Premiership clash at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
