SHOPRITE IS GIVING 36 SMALL BUSINESSES R70,000 EACH

Retailer Shoprite is offering entrepreneurs the chance to win a marketing boost in a new Hustle Entrepreneur of the Month competition.

The competition is open to any business with a turnover of less than R1 million, owned by a South African citizen older than 18, and which can get through vetting as a legitimate business.

Between August and October, 12 winners a month will each receive R50,000 in radio airtime, R10,000 in cash and have a Thundafund profile set up including a short video for the business.

All entries are via the competition website.

Listeria outbreak: SA neighbours ban meat exports

Four countries in southern Africa on Monday took steps against South African chilled meat imports made at a factory found to be the origin of the world’s worst-ever listeria outbreak.

Mozambique and Namibia announced they were immediately suspending imports of the products. Botswana said it was recalling the items “with immediate effect”, while Zambia called on South African retail chains in its country to pull the incriminated goods from local shelves.

Shoprite’s new R5 meals meet market’s needs

The new R5 meals include:

• Fried fish – R5 • Potato hash brown – R2 • Chicken hotdog – R3.50 • Fried egg & tomato sandwich – R4 • Small pap – R2 • Pancake – R3 • Sweetcorn on a stick – R2.50 • Soup and igwinya (vetkoek) – R5 • Boiled egg and igwinya combo – R4

The retailer regularly subsidises the cost of basic food items and has extended its bread subsidy indefinitely, with its 600g in-house bakery bread retailing for just R4.99 since April 2016.
