PETROL TO COST R1 A LITRE MORE FROM TOMORROW, REACHING A RECORD HIGH

The price of petrol will push to a record high from midnight on Tuesday, with the central energy fund (CEF) announcing that under-recovery in August would prompt fuel increases ranging from 99c to R1.79.

The price of unleaded 93 petrol will therefore rise 99c, unleaded 95 R1 and diesel R1.24. Illuminating paraffin will cost an additional R1.04 and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) R1.79.

The Automobile Association has warned that the increases — a record when not factoring in months when new taxes took effect — will be “catastrophic” for motorists.

HOW MUCH ARE SA’S NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES PAYING FOR PETROL?

The recent hike came after midnight when petrol and diesel respectively increased by 23 cents a litre, hiking the price to R16.02  for petrol inland, R15.43 coastal and R14.44 for the 50ppm diesel – the highest prices in South African history.

GlobalPetrolPrices.com explains the process on how you end up paying for fuel and the various price differences.

The average price of fuel around the world is R16 per liter.

As a general rule, more affluent countries have higher prices while poorer countries [...]

WHOPPING INCREASE IN PETROL PRICES

Motorists are in for a massive 82c-a-litre increase in the price of petrol on Tuesday.

This is for both 93- and 95-octane petrol. Diesel will also increase even further by between 85 and 87 cents a litre, depending on the grade.

This comes on the back of increases in May that took fuel prices to record highs.

Paraffin will cost 82 cents a litre more. Energy Minister Jeff Radebe announces the adjustments on Friday afternoon, saying they were the result of a depreciation in the rand against the dollar and an increase in the price of crude oil.

The international price of petroleum products also contributed.

The Department of Energy said it urged [...]

Here’s what R100 buys you around the world right now

The rand is currently enjoying one of its longest winning streaks since 2002, with the currency trading at R12.37 to the dollar on Monday, 8 January.

Notably it has been on the front foot since December, supported by investors’ hopes that the newly elected leader of the ruling ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa, would push through business-friendly policies.

However, a Reuters poll held on Friday (5 January) found that the run is likely to end soon, with technical indicators now suggesting the rand is overbought.

There are also doubts about how much Ramaphosa, a promised reformer, can do for South Africa’s ailing economy, with the polled strategists saying that the rand is [...]
