Kenya: Rain, Rain, Rain Everywhere, But No Water Is Being Harvested

Nairobians are questioning why rain water is not being harvested in dams to offer reprieve during the constant water rationings.

Those on Twitter shared videos of the floods and illustrations on how the run-off water could be harvested.

Some however stated the need for the run-off water to be purified urging Nairobians not to litter so as to have harvestable water.

The Meteorological Department on Monday issued a floods warning to Nairobi residents.

Some of the areas named as likely to experience flooding are South C Shopping Centre, Mathare, Huruma, Loresho, Muthangari and the Kileleshwa Ring Road interchange.

Did climate change help modern humans emerge?

Environment changes transformed early humans, who learned how to use lighter tools, hunt new kinds of animals and communicate with other groups.

At this Olorgesailie Basin excavation site, the Smithsonian team discovered key artifacts and pigments. Fossil bones found at the site also showed that a significant change in the kinds of animals in this region occurred around the same time as the transitions in human behavior. In the latest of two studies, a majority of truck drivers and turn-boys in Nakuru chose ‘selfies’ or self-testing (self-testing is when you perform an HIV test on yourself, in private, and get an immediate result) instead of being tested by a health worker.

In the second study, prostitutes in Kisumu were used in what has been described as “successful distribution of self-test to their clients and partners”. Studies justifying the introduction of self-test kits in Kenya show truck drivers, sex workers, pharmacists and couples are eager to take up the [...]

Kenya unveils first new railway in a century

More than a century after a colonial railway gave birth to modern Kenya, the country is betting on a new Chinese-built route to cement its position as the gateway to East Africa.

The $3.2 billion (2.8 billion euro) railway linking Nairobi with the port city of Mombasa will Wednesday take its first passengers on the 472 kilometre (293 mile) journey, allowing them to skip a hair-raising drive on one of Kenya’s most dangerous highways.

The railway is the country’s biggest infrastructure project since independence, and while it has courted controversy, it is a key selling point for the ruling Jubilee party ahead of August elections. It is also part of a [...]
