2020 applications for grades 1 and 8 at Gauteng schools to open in May

Applications for the 2020 academic year for grades 1 and 8 in Gauteng will open in May, the provincial education department announced on Sunday.

The applications open on May 13 and close on July 15.

“The online system was introduced to make it easy and convenient for parents to submit applications rather than queue at a school. It has also provided accurate information to the department for planning purposes.

“Applications are opened early to provide adequate time for planning of allocation of resources such as educators, classrooms, learning and teaching study materials,” said Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

Makhura believed digital revolution could address Gauteng unemployment crisis

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has placed his hopes on the advent of the fourth industrial revolution to provide solutions for the province’s youth unemployment crisis.

Makhura delivered his state of the province address at the Gauteng legislature on Monday where he said nearly 2-million young people in the province were unemployed, not in schooling or receiving any sort of training.

Another fuel price cut on the cards for March

While the recent political changes have inspired a more jubilant mood among many South Africans, motorists will have even more reason to smile at the beginning of March, with current data indicating that a fuel price reduction is on the cards.

Mid-month data is pointing towards a petrol price decrease of around 30 cents a litre while the cost of diesel is likely to fall by approximately 40 cents and illuminating paraffin by 21 cents.

This would bring the price of 95 Unleaded down to R13.82 in Gauteng and R13.33 at the coast.

HAWKS ARRESTS 9 IN CONNECTION WITH VAT SCAM

Investigators say false VAT vendor details with fraudulent supporting documents were used to register ghost profiles with the South African Revenue Service (Sars) in a bid to claim around a R100 million.

The Hawks have arrested nine suspects linked to a syndicate that’s been operating a value added tax (VAT) scam in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

Investigators say false VAT vendor details with fraudulent supporting documents were used to register ghost profiles with the South African Revenue Service (Sars) in a bid to claim around a R100 million.

Officers seized an AK47, gold bars as well as Kruger Rands worth millions of rand.
