Africa’s Wind Project Pipeline Grows to 18GW

There is growing momentum behind the development of long-term incentive mechanisms to support African wind markets

The wind industry has been slow to take off in Africa. Developers commissioned projects in only four African markets in 2018. However, the policy inconsistency that has held the market back in previous years is beginning to change.

The continent’s wind project pipeline stands at 18 gigawatts as of Q1 2019, although the project realization rate in the region is still low due to a host of challenges faced by developers.

Zimbabwe increases diesel, petrol prices by up to 47%

Harare – Zimbabwe’s energy regulator on Tuesday announced that prices of diesel and petrol had been increased by up to 47% effective immediately, a day after the central bank said oil firms would now buy dollars to import fuel on the interbank market.

The latest price increase had been expected and follows an earlier 150% hike in January, which sparked violent street protests and led to the death of a dozen people after a security crackdown.

Global power management firm charts a path towards sustainable power for Africa

CAPE TOWN – Microgrid energy systems that incorporate energy storage and renewable energy can be effectively used to address Africa’s challenges of energy access, resiliency, and cost, global power management company Eaton Africa said on Friday.

The diversification of Somaliland’s energy mix, and the strengthening of energy security will help address the high costs of electricity which is a significant barrier to growth. During Esres Phase 1 (September 2015 – August 2018), the programme supported the MoEM to develop a policy and regulatory framework and implemented a pilot to establish six hybrid mini-grids that are now fully operational across Somaliland.
