Two new helicopters start operating at Durban, Richards Bay ports

Two new helicopters valued at R250-million went into service on August 31 at the Durban and Richards Bay ports, replacing helicopters that were at the end of their lifecycle.

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) acquired the Italy-manufactured Leonardo AgustaWestland 109SP helicopters under the Transnet Market Demand Strategy and its fleet renewal programme.

The programme seeks to improve operational efficiency and safety in the ports.

The helicopters will service the KwaZulu-Natal ports, where they will transfer marine pilots onto and off visiting ships for vessels to be guided in safely and efficiently.

Locations Africa Expo Sends Message in Durban: ‘Africa is Ready’

DURBAN–The first edition of the Locations Africa Expo and Conference was held this week during the Durban FilmMart, with an eye toward identifying and growing the opportunities to lure incoming productions to the continent.

Durban July: Do It Again does the double

Do it Again becomes only the fifth horse in history to win back-to-back Durban July titles.

A dramatic pre-gate scratching of the race favourite Hawaam opened the door for 2018 winner Do It Again to become the fifth horse in the 123 years of the Durban July to win back-to-back when he snuck home at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday.

Trained by Justin Snaith and ridden by Richard Fourie, the gelding was always going to be up there with the contenders and when Hawaam was scratched following an injury on entrance to the starting gate the defending champion slipped into the favourite slot to bag the R4.25 million.

Hotel chains bet on Africa’s rising

Hilton Hotels & Resorts sees big opportunities for growth in Africa and South Africa, and is aiming for 100 hotels on the continent by 2025 and 10 hotels in South Africa by the same time.

“Africa is truly the continent of opportunities,” Jan Van Der Putten, Hilton vice-president of operations for Africa and the Indian Ocean, said during an interview.

Right now Hilton has four hotels in South Africa – two in Cape Town, one in Durban and one in Sandton in Johannesburg.

At the same time, Hilton is constructing another hotel in Cape Town and one in Durban.
