Listeria outbreak: SA neighbours ban meat exports

Four countries in southern Africa on Monday took steps against South African chilled meat imports made at a factory found to be the origin of the world’s worst-ever listeria outbreak.

Mozambique and Namibia announced they were immediately suspending imports of the products. Botswana said it was recalling the items “with immediate effect”, while Zambia called on South African retail chains in its country to pull the incriminated goods from local shelves.

Over R650m redirected to metros infrastructure development

In response to rapid urbanisation, the forum of Minister and MECs of Human Settlements (MINMEC) has taken a decision to redirect over R650 million Urban Settlements Development Grant (USDG) to the country’s five metropolitan municipalities.

The five municipalities – Mangaung, Ekurhuleni, City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane and City of Cape Town – will use the grant towards infrastructure development which includes social housing, student accommodation, upgrading of informal settlements and acquisition of land for human settlements development.

Joburg and Polokwane named as greenest municipalities

The City of Johannesburg and Polokwane in Limpopo are the greenest municipalities in South Africa. The Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Barbara Thomson, on Tuesday announced the winners of the 7th Greenest Municipality Competition (GMC) in Bloemfontein.

Deputy Minister Thomson acknowledged the role played by South African municipalities in embracing the concept of the green economy by implementing long-term sustainability policies and strategies in partnership with local communities.

City of Johannesburg plans to make billing problems history

The City of Johannesburg declared its “Billing Open Day” on Saturday a resounding success, and promised to get rid of the backlog of over 17 000 billing disputes soon.

This was after officials from the City of Johannesburg, notorious for its billing problems, set up shop at Mark’s Park in Emmarentia to help customers with long-standing billing issues, and for them to settle debt owed to the city.

Mayor Herman Mashaba and the head of the city’s finances Dr Rabelani Dagada went with a team from the Revenue Shared Services Centre to help with the disputed accounts, electricity and water consumption queries and meter issues, according to a statement on Sunday.
