Pick n Pay launches novelty slippers for Slipper Day 2019

Friday, 10 May, is the Reach for A Dream Foundation’s annual Slipper Day. By purchasing a Slipper Day wristband for R10 at any Pick n Pay, Wimpy or Dis-Chem, participants will contribute to providing strength, hope and courage to children with life-threatening illnesses.

For over 30 years, the Reach for A Dream Foundation has brought hope to over 60,000 life-threatened children across South Africa with the goal to give the child courage to carry on their fight.

During this time, more than 16,000 dreams have been fulfilled ranging from a bedroom makeover to arranging for a child to meet their favorite celebrity or fly in a plane.

Checkers launches new collectables promotion – Little Checkers

Following on from its Little Shop and Little Garden promotions, Checkers has launched its Little Checkers collectables. For every R200 spent in store, Checkers and Checkers Hyper shoppers will receive a block pack, each containing a unit that forms part of a 35-piece mini Checkers supermarket.

The blocks come in a 100% recyclable pack and each contains one individual unit (such as a mini till, freezer, shopping cart, dairy shelf and more) as well as stickers to complete the unit and an instruction leaflet.

DESMOND AND LEAH TUTU SPEND WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CARING FOR SICK CHILDREN

The Tutus have been active patrons of the hospital for the past 18 years.

Apart from being regular visitors to the wards‚ their fundraising efforts have contributed to the hospital being able to acquire equipment to screen high-risk infants’ eyes and prevent blindness‚ and equipment for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for which there was no public funding.

The teaching hospital of Stellenbosch University‚ Tygerberg hospital is responsible for providing tertiary medical care to approximately half of the Western Cape’s children in need‚ as well as some children from further afield. EARLY CHILD DEVELOPMENT – BEST PLACE TO INVEST?

A 22-year-long study started among poor populations in Jamaica in the 1970s by Dr Sally Grantham-McGregor and Christine Powell showed that children whose mothers received weekly home visits for two years by doctors and nurses who helped them engage their babies in play attained higher test scores for reading, mathematics and general knowledge later in life. They stayed in school longer, were less likely to be violent or experience depression, and had better social skills. Significantly, they earned 25% on average more than a control group of similar children.
