Nigeria to sign African free-trade pact at AU meeting

Nigeria will sign a continental free-trade deal at an extraordinary summit of the African Union this weekend, bringing the duty-free movement of goods in the region a step closer.

The economy of Africa’s most-populous nation vies with South Africa to be the continent’s biggest and signing up clears a hurdle in the implementation of the African Continental Free-Trade Agreement. President Muhammadu Buhari last week received a report urging him to sign the deal from a committee set up to consider whether the country should join.

Deep appreciation for China in Africa, says Naledi Pandor

South Africa’s International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Dr Naledi Pandor, was on Tuesday positive about the progress made in fostering ties between China and the African continent at the conclusion of the two-day Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) coordinators meeting in Beijing, China.

EFF leader Malema to be sworn in at Pan African Parliament

The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Julius Malema will be among five SA Members of Parliament to be sworn in at the opening ceremony of the sixth ordinary session of the Pan African Parliament (PAP) in Midrand, Johannesburg on Monday.

The others include National Council of Provinces (NCOP) chairperson Thandi Modise, Thoko Didiza the National Assembly house chairperson for internal arrangements, Mandlesizwe Zwelivelile Mandela, and Santosh Vinita Kalyan.

They are replacing Hunadi Mateme, Thandi Memela, Charles Nqakula, and Floyd Shivambu, while Kalyan will serve another two-year term, parliament said in a statement.

President Jacob Zuma commends progress in Libya talks

President Jacob Zuma has commended the progress made towards the resolution of conflict in Libya.

The President was on a working visit to Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo for the fourth meeting of the African Union (AU) High Level Panel on Libya at the level of Heads of States and Government. The meeting was chaired by President Denis Sassou-N’Guesso of the Republic of Congo.

The meeting considered reports by the UN Special Representative, League of the Arab States (LAS), European Union and the AU High Level Representative, Former President of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete.
