Snow forecast for South Africa: Possible flurries for this weekend [map]

by FariedaJuly 18, 2019

The mercury is dropping, and conditions may soon bring a winter wonderland to South Africa by the end of the week: Here’s what the early snow forecast says.

With temperatures set to drop across the south-westerly regions of the country this week, the snow forecast for South Africa is showing us that there’s a possibility of the white stuff landing in both the Eastern and Western Capes before the weekend – that’s according to the dedicated team at SnowReportSA, anyway.

The experts have shared their predictions for the next few days, mapping where they expect the flurries to take place. However, things could change between now and Friday – when the first few flakes are expected to land.

Chances of snowfall on Friday and Saturday

Richard from SnowReportSA spoke to us briefly on Tuesday, indicating that there’s real potential for snowfall on some of the more “frequently-dusted” regions of South Africa. An update was also shared on their Facebook page:

“Following on from our Facebook post yesterday, SnowReportSA is still seeing quite a lot of volatility in the data, but snow is possible for parts of the Western and Eastern Cape for Friday and Saturday as certain areas are looking slightly more consistent.”

Winter flurries in 2019

To establish their maps, SnowReportSA have to assess a wide range of data and draw from a wealth of previous experience to understand how exactly the weather patterns will behave. It can take at least a few weeks before a detailed snow forecast can be published – a lot of work goes into mapping a winter wonderland, you know.

The group have certainly had their work cut out this winter, too. There’s been plenty of snowfall across all three of South Africa’s major capes, with KwaZulu-Natal and Free State also experiencing some light dustings.

Snow forecast for South Africa on 19 – 20 July

This is the very early data we have regarding the snow forecast for South Africa on Friday 19 July and Saturday 20 July respectively. Should the picture change between now and then, we’ll have the updates as we get them.
