Ngidi passes fit ahead of crucial Cricket World Cup clash

Lungi Ngidi has passed a fitness test and will be in the frame to make his return to the Proteas XI that will face New Zealand on Wednesday.

The Proteas have to win all their remaining games to have any hope of progressing to the Cricket World Cup semi-finals. They face an unbeaten New Zealand at Edgbaston in Birmingham before a meeting with Pakistan at Lord’s on Sunday in this week’s action.

Left-arm seamer Beuran Hendricks is likely to make way for the return of the Hilton College old boy. Ngidi pulled up four overs into his spell against Bangladesh. He missed the defeat to India, the washout against the West Indies and the Proteas first win of the tournament against Afghanistan last Saturday.

Ngidi found his time on the sidelines frustrating especially as he watched the team struggle.

“It’s been tough. Injuries are never nice, but with the support staff that I’ve had around me it’s been pretty good and I’ve been alright,” Ngidi told the press after Monday’s training session.

“It’s just been frustrating not being able to play.”

The Proteas quick is eager to pounce on a Black Caps team that haven’t been tested in their four World Cup fixtures. New Zealand have completed three straightforward run chases and had their contest against India rained off without a ball bowled. They made heavy weather of hauling in Bangladesh’s 244 at the Oval though, suggesting there are weaknesses the Proteas could exploit.

“I don’t think their middle and lower order have been tested enough,” he said.

“They have got the bulk of their runs at the top of the order, so if we can get one or two maybe we can test them. I think then you could be looking at a different situation with their batting.”

Ngidi confirmed that he is back to 100% fitness and is bowling at full speed.

“Ja … I’ve just finished a fitness test today and passed that, so I’m match-fit ready,” he said.

“It’s 100%. That’s how the fitness test goes and if you’re not bowling at 100% then you’re not ready to play.”
