Pretoria – President Jacob Zuma has wished all South African families a peaceful and joyous International Day of Families which is observed across the world today.

The United Nations declared 15 May as the International Day of Families, which is observed under the theme: “Families, education and well-being”.

This year’s day focuses on the role of families and family-oriented policies in promoting education and the overall well-being of family members.

According to the Presidency, International Day of Families remains one of the most significant days declared by the United Nations to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families,.

“Families remain a pillar of every individual and society, therefore on this day we call on South African families to promote solid family values that will help individuals to make right decisions in life that will contribute to nation building and promoting human rights.

“Government acknowledges the challenges facing our families particularly issues around youth unemployment, housing, health, education, substance abuse and societal social ills that affect the standing of our families. As government we will continue to work hard to address these challenges to ensure a better life for all,” said President Zuma.

The day also aims to promote the importance of knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development. – SAnews.gov.za
