Semenya ‘thrilled’ to be ‘among best in the world’

South African middle distance star Caster Semenya says that she is thrilled to be amongst the best athletes in the world after she picked up her third 800m world title at the IAAF World Championships in London on Sunday.

Semenya won the 2017 final in a time of 1:55.16, setting a world leading time over the distance in the process. She also bagged her second medal at the athletics showpiece, adding the 800m gold medal to the bronze she won in the 1,500m last week in her first major final in the event.

Government congratulates IAAF medallists

Government has congratulated athletes Luvo Manyonga and Ruswahl Samaai on their medal wins at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in London.

On Monday, Communications Minister Ayanda Dlodlo congratulated long jumper Luvo Manyonga, who won a gold medal and Ruswahl Samaai, who won a bronze medal in the men’s long jump on Saturday.

South Africa to win windfall of R27bn if RWC bid is successful

This comes after the government gave SA Rugby Union (Saru) the green light to proceed with bidding for the rights to host the month-long event. The country last hosted the showpiece in 1995.

The announcement by cabinet last week that it had approved the request for guarantees to the value of R2.7bn, which was required from World Rugby as a prerequisite in hosting the event, was welcomed by the sports and tourism fraternities.

South Africa to bid for 2023 Rugby World Cup

Cabinet has approved South Africa to submit its bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup (RWC), says Communications Minister Ayanda Dlodlo.

“Cabinet has approved the overall proposed package for this tournament which is an economic bid, that would minimise the demands on the fiscus as well as stimulate economic activity employment and empowerment,” Minister Dlodlo said on Thursday.

She was addressing a media briefing in Tshwane on the outcomes of a Cabinet meeting that took place on Tuesday.
