Boks ‘better’ but only because bar set too low…

The All Blacks are the rugby union benchmark and if the Springboks have any aspirations of once again reaching the top echelons of world rugby, it’s impossible for coach Allister Coetzee to remain at the helm.

It’s a harsh statement, but one that needs to be made.

The Springbok coach was in defiant mode on Monday when he arrived back in South Africa after the team’s year-end European tour.

He was quick to point out that the Boks had won 50% of their matches on tour, having returned winless at the same stage last year.

The Boks finished the 2017 season with seven wins, four losses and two draws.

Rabada down to No 3 in Test rankings

Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has dropped to third on the ICC Test rankings for bowlers.

India’s Ravindra Jadeja, who took match figures of 5-84 against Sri Lanka earlier this week, replaced Rabada in second spot on the rankings.

Australia’s Mitchell Starc has also returned to the top 10 in 10th position after his match figures of six for 128 against England helped him to gain three places.

India’s Ravichandran Ashwin, who became the fastest man to 300 wickets in Tests, has consolidated his fourth position by gaining nine points which have put him on 849 points, 27 behind Rabada.

Bavuma to mentor youngsters

Proteas batsman Temba Bavuma will mentor budding cricketers at the high performance centres across the country.

The Cape Cobras star said he cannot wait to pass his vast knowledge of the game onto the youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Most of these youngsters are looking up to us and we must help them realise their dreams as well,” Bavuma said during the Cricket SA (CSA) and Standard Bank cricket development media launch in Dobsonville, Soweto yesterday.

“It’s such an honour to be involved and I am looking forward to it,” Bavuma added.

Return to Bafana Bafana camp was unexpected – Tshabalala

Siphiwe Tshabalala was going about his usual business at the Kaizer Chiefs’ Naturena headquarters on Thursday morning when one of the club’s administrators told the veteran midfielder that he’d received a call-up to Bafana Bafana.

The 33-year-old Tshabalala has not played for Bafana since 2014 and he said administrator Abdulla Mayet’s unexpected news was like an errant lightning bolt on a clear day. “I received the news today after training at the village‚” he said.
