Mbalula asks for SANDF’s help to combat crime in Gauteng and Western Cape

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has requested the support of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to help combat crime in the Western Cape and Gauteng‚ the police ministry announced on Monday evening.

“Minister Mbalula notes that in recent past South Africa has been engulfed by an insurgence of extremely violent crime that has made communities feel and be unsafe‚” the ministry said.

It added that levels of violence in recent months involved the use of weapons of war in the commission of serious crimes where even innocent bystanders and children had fallen victim of gang-related violent crimes.

Safety tips for motorists during heavy rains

With heavy rainfall causing chaos on the roads, the South African Police Service has urged motorists to be cautious.

Heavy rains and strong winds have gripped most parts of the country, causing damage in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.

Images and videos shared on social media today show cars submerged in flood water on the N2 highway in Durban. There have also been reports of trees being knocked down by high speed winds, while the roofs on several homes and schools have been blown off.

Eskom tour puts safety first

Eskom has embarked on a nationwide public safety campaign to raise awareness of the safe use of electricity.

The tour got underway in Khuma in the North West province on Wednesday.

“This visit is the first in a series of tours around the country, where Eskom officials will be raising awareness about using electricity safely. The aim is to educate the media and communities about some of the dangers associated with unsafe and improper use of electricity, including illegal connections, cable theft, low-hanging conductors, meter tampering and bypassing,” said the power utility on Wednesday.
