Travelstart buys Cape Town’s SafariNow

Two of the biggest players in online travel in Africa are hooking up. Travelstart said on Wednesday that it is acquiring a majority stake in, which it said is South Africa’s largest accommodation booking website.

The value of the deal, which will see Travelstart taking on SafariNow’s 40-person team, has not been disclosed.

SafariNow, which was founded in 1999, will stick to its core business of selling accommodation and retain its current brand, CEO, Tom Williams, and team, Travelstart said in a statement.

Airbnb deal with Cape Town a first in Africa

Airbnb and the City of Cape Town signed the hospitality platform’s first collaboration agreement with a city in Africa on Wednesday.

Under the agreement, Airbnb and the City will work together to promote the benefits of people-to-people tourism for Cape Town residents and their communities, and promote Cape Town across the world as a unique travel destination.

Since 2008, hosts on Airbnb have welcomed over 200 million guests in 191 countries. In Cape Town there are 17 600 active listings on Airbnb and hosts have earned a combined income of R762m over the past 12 months.

New activities for Sun City

A new rope adventure park has been developed at the Valley of the Waves, by integrated tourism group Tourvest in partnership with Chimp & Zee. Scheduled to open on November 25, the park is offered through the group’s Sun City based Mankwe-GAMETRACKERS business.

The 45-minute long activity will include high balancing beams, zip lines, hanging spider nets and jungle rope bridges.  It will have two access points, allowing day visitors outside the Valley of the Waves to enjoy the facility as well.

Tsogo Sun ranked 3rd most empowered JSE-listed company

Tsogo Sun has been ranked third on the JSE Top 100 Most Empowered Companies for the second consecutive year.

Tsogo Sun’s majority shareholder, Hosken Consolidated Investments, was ranked the most empowered black-owned company in South Africa in 2017.
