Listeria outbreak: SA neighbours ban meat exports

Four countries in southern Africa on Monday took steps against South African chilled meat imports made at a factory found to be the origin of the world’s worst-ever listeria outbreak.

Mozambique and Namibia announced they were immediately suspending imports of the products. Botswana said it was recalling the items “with immediate effect”, while Zambia called on South African retail chains in its country to pull the incriminated goods from local shelves.

African CEOs to meet in Geneva to discuss investment in Africa

Africa CEO Forum will look at revitalising investment flows into the continent and comes at a time when commodity prices are showing signs of recovery

About 20 South African CEOs are expected to attend the Africa CEO Forum, which, is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, later in March.

The fifth edition of the forum is due to focus on international investments in Africa. It is running from March 20–21.

The forum will look at revitalising investment flows into Africa and comes when commodity prices are showing signs of recovery.

The forum is expected to host 1,000 key decision makers in industry, finance and politics from across the globe.

MINING AND TOURISM SECTORS TO DRIVE GROWTH IN 2017

One of Namibia’s leading stock brokerages, Simonis Storm Securities (SSS), expects domestic economic growth for 2016 to be 2.5 percent, down from the 5.3 percent in 2015

The main drivers of this reduced growth include a struggling Fiscus and slower private sector credit extension (PSCE), which have led to significantly slower construction activity.

Construction has been the main private sector driver of the economy over the last three years.

At the same time the looming water crisis has severely affected the manufacturing and agricultural sectors. SSS expects expect 2.8 percent GDP growth for 2017, mainly on the expectation of a strong mining sector in 2017.

ONDANGWA TO SPEND N$270 MILLION ON INFRASTRUCTURE

Ongwediva-Ondangwa Town Council will spend more than N$270 million to implement its five-year strategic plan that will include the upgrading of infrastructure such as roads and sewerage systems

In the five-year strategic plan that stretches from 2016 to 2021 the town council indicated it will need about N$275, 044 to implement several developmental activities over that period of time.

The town council launched this strategic development roadmap towards the end of last year.
