Black Panther is a milestone for the film industry

The film brilliantly represents a myriad of perspectives and arguments.

In a sign that the acting world’s respect for John Kani goes deep, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira both gestured with their arms folded into an X – the sign of Wakanda from their hit film Black Panther – when the South African acting legend entered the room.

On Friday, Nyong’o and Gurira joined Kani and actress Connie Chiume for the South African leg of the Black Panther press tour.

The film, which took in a staggering $75.8 million (R881 million) on Friday alone, was set to recoup its $200-million budget yesterday.

Netflix, Amazon and Hulu are poised for Oscar stardom

Streaming TV is crashing the Oscar party, and it’s only a matter of time before a production from Netflix or Amazon or even — someone get the defibrillator — Hulu wins Best Picture.

Last year, “Manchester by the Sea,” an Amazon co-production (with Pearl Street Films and K Period Media), was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture and took won two statuettes — Best Actor (Casey Affleck) and Best Original Screenplay (Kenneth Lonergan).

Miss Universe back on home soil after victory

THE first thing Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters did after she won the Miss South Africa title was to present the pageant with a power-point presentation of everything she wanted to do to get to Miss Universe.

Fast forward to November last year and she finally had the chance to wear that crown.

The Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan dies aged 46

Irish singer-songwriter Dolores O’Riordan, front woman of the multi-million selling rock band The Cranberries, died suddenly in London on Monday, aged 46, her publicist said.

“Irish and international singer Dolores O’Riordan has died suddenly in London today, family members are devastated,” Lindsey Holmes said in a statement.

“The lead singer…was in London for a short recording session,” she added. “No further details are available at this time.”

A spokeswoman for London’s Metropolitan police said officers are “dealing with a sudden death” after they were called to a hotel in Park Lane, in the centre of the British capital, at 0905 GMT this morning.
