Zuma no longer going to Zimbabwe

President Jacob Zuma will no longer be travelling to Zimbabwe on Wednesday, in the wake of the resignation of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe.

“President Jacob Zuma will no longer travel to Harare in the Republic of Zimbabwe… on Wednesday 22 November 2017,” the Presidency said in a statement.

New Angola President to visit SA

President Jacob Zuma will on Thursday host the newly elected Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço during a two-day State visit to South Africa, says the Presidency.

President Lourenço’s State visit will conclude on Friday. He will be accompanied by several Cabinet Ministers and senior government officials, as well as a business delegation that will participate in a business forum to discuss investment and trade opportunities between South Africa and Angola.

The two countries enjoy historical and political relations dating back to the period of the struggles against colonialism and apartheid.

President Zuma to attend Angola’s inauguration

President Jacob Zuma will travel to Luanda, Angola to attend the inauguration ceremony of the President-elect João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, the presidency said on Saturday.

Lourenço, 63, of the ruling Popular Liberation Movement of Angola (MPLA) will replace President dos Santos who retired after 38 years in power.

The inauguration is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

South Africa and Angola enjoy historical and fraternal bilateral relations that were cemented during the period of the liberation struggle when Angola housed and supported South African liberation cadres in various camps in that country.

Plummeting oil revenue hits Lusophone prospects

Angola and Mozambique may have very different economies but their current economic problems have the same two root causes: low energy prices and economic mismanagement.

Low oil prices have slashed Angolan revenues and slowed the development of gas and coal projects in Mozambique. At the same time, Maputo’s borrowing resulted in default in January, while Luanda’s continued opacity and state control has not created an economy sufficiently robust to weather the period of low oil prices more comfortably.
