Airbnb highlights new accessibility filters and features for disabled guests

Airbnb has released 21 new accessibility filters across the platform that make it easier for disabled guests to find accessible travel accommodation worldwide.

The new filters allow Airbnb guests to search for listings with specific features, including step-free entry to rooms, entryways that are wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair, and more. Previously, guests on Airbnb were only able to search for ‘‘wheelchair accessible’ listings, which did not always meet travellers’ individual needs.

No exit inspection, no rental deposit deduction, simple – but the refunding of rental deposits is a massive cause of conflict between tenants and landlords.

Here’s how it is supposed to work: tenants are made to pay a deposit, which is usually a month’s rent before they move in, to cover the landlord should they move out, still owing rent or if there is damage to the property.

The deposit has to be put in an interest-bearing account and then refunded with interest when the tenant moves out. That is if the property is in the same condition as it was when it was let out originally.

Travelstart buys Cape Town’s SafariNow

Two of the biggest players in online travel in Africa are hooking up. Travelstart said on Wednesday that it is acquiring a majority stake in SafariNow.com, which it said is South Africa’s largest accommodation booking website.

The value of the deal, which will see Travelstart taking on SafariNow’s 40-person team, has not been disclosed.

SafariNow, which was founded in 1999, will stick to its core business of selling accommodation and retain its current brand, CEO, Tom Williams, and team, Travelstart said in a statement.

Airbnb deal with Cape Town a first in Africa

Airbnb and the City of Cape Town signed the hospitality platform’s first collaboration agreement with a city in Africa on Wednesday.

Under the agreement, Airbnb and the City will work together to promote the benefits of people-to-people tourism for Cape Town residents and their communities, and promote Cape Town across the world as a unique travel destination.

Since 2008, hosts on Airbnb have welcomed over 200 million guests in 191 countries. In Cape Town there are 17 600 active listings on Airbnb and hosts have earned a combined income of R762m over the past 12 months.
