South Africa has the highest data prices among Africa’s biggest economies

A new research paper by Research ICT Africa shows that the price of data in South Africa has not changed over the past two years – and is the most expensive out of all leading African economies.

South Africa’s mobile data prices have come under constant attack in recent months, with targeted social media campaigns like #DataMustFall drawing attention to the high prices local operators charge.

The price of 1GB in South Africa from South Africa’s two largest mobile operators – MTN and Vodacom – have flatlined at around R150 since 2014.

The 20 best hospitals in South Africa

Discovery Health has released its latest Discovery Health Patient Survey Score (PaSS), listing the best hospitals around the country based on patient experience.

The globally validated survey allows patients to voice their views to healthcare providers of how care was experienced during admission to hospital. To collect patient feedback on the experience of care in hospital, adult members of Discovery Health Medical Scheme are surveyed after their discharge from hospital.

Incentive to support black filmmakers

The Department of Trade and Industry (dti) will spend R100 million to support emerging black filmmakers.

“The dti will spend R100 million to support emerging black filmmakers through the South Africa Emerging Black Filmmakers Incentive by the end of March 2018,” said the department’s Director of Film Production Nelly Molokoane.

Molokoane was speaking at the Emerging Black Filmmakers Workshop at the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) that is currently underway. The workshop was targeted at emerging film producers who want to access the incentive scheme.

50 billion connected devices by 2020

By 2020, as many as 50 billion devices will be connected, from watches and TVs to trucks, pipelines, and power meters says the BSA Foundation.

Sensors, data, connectivity, encryption, the cloud, and the software that links all technology are poised to exponentially increase in the coming years, the group said in a new report.

The report, Sensor Sensibility: Getting the Most From the Internet of Things, argues that we have only scratched the surface of what IoT can achieve, and industry and government must be prepared to help this emerging technology succeed.
