EL NINO TO RETURN TO SOUTHERN AFRICA?

El Niño, a Spanish word used by Peruvian anchovy fishermen that means ‘boy child’ a reference to Christ child. El Niño is the warming of ocean currents off the South American coast around December and causes below normal rain patterns and above normal temperatures in specific areas around the world and Southern Africa often gets hit hard with drought. For 2 months in a row now the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued an El Niño watch meaning all eyes are open and forecasts thus far are looking favourable for an El Niño to develop again this year.

TOP SPOT FOR LOCAL SCIENTIST AMONG WORLD’S BEST

Shireen Mentor, a 29-year-old resident of Montevideo, near Manenberg, has been named one of the world’s top young scientists.

Mentor, a PhD student from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) has just returned from a prestigious science conference in Germany, and is already preparing for her next visit to the USA.

Mentor’s five-day trip to Germany late last month came after being selected to attend the 68thLindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, which is one of the most prestigious science conferences in the world.
