In South Africa, there is still a shortage of qualified graduates in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), which has led to a huge need in these industries for talented people with relevant knowledge and skills.

“[Science] is more than a school subject, or the periodic table, or the properties of waves. It is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand and explore and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world,” said former US president Barack Obama at a White House Science Fair in March 2015.

MAN IS HAILED AS HERO IN CHINA AFTER RARE ORGAN DONATION CHANGES FIVE LIVES

Phillip Hancock was only 27 years-old when he passed away two months ago – but the compassionate young man’s death made history in Chongqing, China.

Hancock had been working as an English teacher there for four years until he fell ill from complications with type 1 diabetes.

When he was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, his heart had temporarily stopped beating. By the time his family arrived, he had fallen into a coma and died.

While this may seem like a fairly common tragedy, there was something remarkable about the Australian man’s passing because he was an organ donor.

DESMOND AND LEAH TUTU SPEND WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CARING FOR SICK CHILDREN

The Tutus have been active patrons of the hospital for the past 18 years.

Apart from being regular visitors to the wards‚ their fundraising efforts have contributed to the hospital being able to acquire equipment to screen high-risk infants’ eyes and prevent blindness‚ and equipment for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for which there was no public funding.

The teaching hospital of Stellenbosch University‚ Tygerberg hospital is responsible for providing tertiary medical care to approximately half of the Western Cape’s children in need‚ as well as some children from further afield.
