DStv to hike prices on 1 April: all the details

The stronger rand appears to have helped MultiChoice keep its annual price increases below inflation. The broadcaster said the price of DStv Premium, its top-end bouquet, will rise by 2.5% on 1 April 2018 — from R789/month to R809/month.

That compares to a price hike of 4% in 2017 for DStv Premium. A year ago, the rand was trading over R13/US$. On Friday morning, it was trading at R11.59.

Mid-tier bouquets, however, will see bigger increases, with DStv Compact Plus (formerly Extra) set to rise by 4.1% from R489 to R509/month and DStv Compact going up by 5.5% to R385/month from R365 now.

Last year, Compact Plus was hiked by 6.5% and Compact by 5.8%.

Major windfall for Clicks workers

JSE-listed retail healthcare group Clicks’ workers are set to receive a major windfall of R1.27billion after selling up to 7642904 Clicks Group ordinary shares at R166 a share.

Shares are held by 6814 employees, with black employees holding 87percent of the shares and women 64percent. Pharmacists comprise 5percent of the employee stock ownership plan (Esop) beneficiaries. Participating employees receive a cash dividend annually, equal to 10percent of the total dividend paid to ordinary shareholders each year.

The Clicks Group Employee Share Ownership Trust (Esop Trust) disposed of the shares to unwind 50percent of the scheme.

Another fuel price cut on the cards for March

While the recent political changes have inspired a more jubilant mood among many South Africans, motorists will have even more reason to smile at the beginning of March, with current data indicating that a fuel price reduction is on the cards.

Mid-month data is pointing towards a petrol price decrease of around 30 cents a litre while the cost of diesel is likely to fall by approximately 40 cents and illuminating paraffin by 21 cents.

This would bring the price of 95 Unleaded down to R13.82 in Gauteng and R13.33 at the coast.
