Zuma makes NPA representations at the eleventh hour

President Jacob Zuma submitted his representations stating why he should not face prosecution for the now infamous 2009 spy types saga to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) late on Wednesday evening.

The representations were initially supposed to be submitted in November 2017, but National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams extended the deadline to January 31, 2018.

NPA spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku has confirmed that the president’s legal representatives submitted his representations at 21:00 at the NPA offices.

Steinhoff scandal cost Government Employees Fund R20bn

The Government Employees Pension Fund (Gepf) lost about R20billion from the collapse of Steinhoff’s share price after the group admitted accounting irregularities.

This emerged from the hearings in Parliament yesterday when the Steinhoff supervisory board appeared before three parliamentary committees -the standing committees on finance, public accounts and public service and administration.

The Gepf said its Steinhoff shares were worth R24.1bn on November 30 last year but worth only R3.1bn on January 18 this year.

The Gepf holds 392million Steinhoff shares, about 9.1percent of all the group’s shares.

Samsung’s mobile division continues to struggle

Samsung earned $14.13 billion in operating profit in the fourth quarter of last year but this stellar performance can’t really be attributed to the company’s mobile division. Samsung’s mobile business has been under pressure for quite a while now due to several factors such as increasing competition from Chinese rivals in key markets.

The company released its earnings results for Q4 2017 today and they reveal that the struggles of its mobile business are far from over.

It may get worse before it gets better.
