Rand’s rally takes the shine off a strong gold price for SA miners

For South African gold miners, it’s both the best and worst of times.

The metal started the year with a bang, rising 4% so far and trading near the highest since August 2016.

But an equally impressive rally in the rand means that SA-focused producers are likely to miss out on the party.

Because mining companies pay most of their expenses in local currency, a stronger rand squeezes profit margins and can render some operations unprofitable.

Many of SA’s gold mines date back to the 1950s and 1960s, and much of the easily accessible metal has been exhausted, while labour-intensive mining methods compound the effect of currency moves.

Panic and blame as Cape Town braces for water shut-off

For some residents of drought-stricken Cape Town, the prospect of the taps running dry is almost too much to bear.

For others, the thought of queueing under the scorching summer sun for a meagre daily water ration will be a necessary evil to keep their businesses solvent.

But the day, currently forecast for April 12, has been creeping closer – brought forward by the city’s excessive consumption despite repeated public warnings from increasingly panicked officials.

Netflix, Amazon and Hulu are poised for Oscar stardom

Streaming TV is crashing the Oscar party, and it’s only a matter of time before a production from Netflix or Amazon or even — someone get the defibrillator — Hulu wins Best Picture.

Mnangagwa says Zim is open for business

Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa has portrayed Zimbabwe as welcoming investors from around the world, highlighting that his administration was re-integrating white commercial farmers to boost agricultural productivity and insisting that there would be no immunity for members of the previous administration headed by Robert Mugabe.
