Teraco is building the biggest data centre in Africa

Construction of Teraco’s new data centre in Bredell is progressing swiftly. The company began building the 24-megawatt site in January, which is expected be completed in November 2017.

The completed project will bring Teraco’s total power supply to 50 megawatts by the end of the year. The new Riverfields Hyperscale centre in Bredell will also extend NAPAfrica, the largest Internet Exchange Point in Africa.

With a technical deployment space of 6,000m², the Riverfields centre will be the largest commercial data centre in Africa. The company also completed the construction of its second data centre in Isando, Johannesburg earlier this year.

Vuyani Jarana appointed as SAA CEO

Vuyani Jarana has been appointed as the new South African Airways (SAA) Chief Executive Officer. “He will commence his duties after his current employer has officially released him. Mr Jarana is currently Chief Officer for Vodacom Business at Vodacom Group LTD, a position he has held since 2012,” National Treasury said on Thursday.

Jarana is also a member of the core leadership team of Vodacom Group responsible for the enterprise segment across the continent.

South African Financial Blockchain Consortium wins tech project of the year award

The South African Financial Blockchain Consortium (SAFBC) has won the blockchain category of The Banker’s 2017 technology project of the year awards.

Membership of the consortium comprises 24 banks, financial market infrastructure providers, and other institutions involved in the financial services industry – institutions which traditionally are fierce competitors.

It also counts two regulators among its membership as observers. The SAFBC is exploring different technologies, including Ethereum, Hyperledger, and Corda.

South Africa to bid for 2023 Rugby World Cup

Cabinet has approved South Africa to submit its bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup (RWC), says Communications Minister Ayanda Dlodlo.

“Cabinet has approved the overall proposed package for this tournament which is an economic bid, that would minimise the demands on the fiscus as well as stimulate economic activity employment and empowerment,” Minister Dlodlo said on Thursday.

She was addressing a media briefing in Tshwane on the outcomes of a Cabinet meeting that took place on Tuesday.
