UN visits KZN to strengthen electoral democracy in Africa

Delegates from 24 African countries, who are representatives of the United Nations’ electoral management body, have paid a visit to KwaZulu-Natal to strengthen electoral democracy in Africa.

The main purpose was to interact with members of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature which has had to deal with political tensions. KwaZulu-Natal has achieved political stability, despite many years of political strife, before the first democratic elections. Some legislature members were part of the peace efforts in those years.

SARS outreach project to educate deaf, blind communities

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has embarked on an outreach project aimed at serving and educating the deaf and blind communities on tax compliance.

With Tax Season 2017 having opened in July, the purpose of the outreach project is for the SARS Language Unit to equip the deaf and blind communities with skills and knowledge on requirements to submit tax returns.

The revenue service had already started assisting the deaf and blind at the inaugural rollout of its initiative at Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf in Johannesburg last week Thursday.

MTN South Africa’s data revenue shows strong growth

MTN has released its financial results for the six months ended 30 June 2017, which showed a good performance in its South African operations.

MTN South Africa increased its subscriber base by 1.5% to 31.2 million, and increased its revenue by 1.6% to R20.1 billion

The increase in revenue was supported by a 5.2% increase in service revenue, an 18.5% increase in data revenue, and a 37.6% increase in digital revenue.

MTN SA’s prepaid subscriber base increased by 1.7% to 26 million, while the post-paid segment showed early signs of a recovery – increasing by 0.2% to 5.2 million.

ICASA: R2-per-MB out-of-bundle fees must go

Amid complaints of how expensive it is to communicate in South Africa, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) says it is implementing several interventions to ensure that data prices fall.

Rubben Mohlaloga, ICASA’s Acting Chairperson, also highlighted the “crazy” out of bundle rates, which he said the regulator would look at going forward. Mohlaloga said this when he briefed the Select Committee on Communications and Public Enterprises on Wednesday.
