Women’s Month: Time to take action

As South Africa marks the beginning of Women’s Month, Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Susan Shabangu, has called on men to take part in the struggle against gender-based violence.

Minister Shabangu made the call during the official launch of the 2017 Women’s Month held in Tshwane on Tuesday.

South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of pass laws to women.  Minister Shabangu said working with men through strategic partnerships is necessary to transform society.

Vodacom phasing out “VIP” contracts for high-profile South Africans

Vodacom has started phasing out “VIP” contracts for high-profile South Africans, replacing them with a loyalty programme. The statement from Vodacom follows a report by the Sunday World that the network had stopped issuing free airtime to several members of the Mandela family.

The report stated that Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was downgraded to a capped top-up contract of R2, 500 per month. Vodacom said it could not provide more details on the contracts, as this would violate POPI privacy laws.

Uber hires armed response group to protect drivers in high-risk areas

Uber South Africa has signed a deal with armed response company, Hi-Risk, following continued violent clashes with metered taxi drivers.

According to a report by cnet, the security company confirmed via email that it was working with Uber to protect drivers and passengers around South Africa, but because of a non-disclosure agreement it signed with the company, it couldn’t provide further information.

Facebook is working on a video chat device

Facebook Inc. is working on a video chat device for the home – the first major hardware product from its experimental Building 8 lab.

Featuring a laptop-sized touchscreen, the device represents a new product category and could be announced as soon as next spring’s F8 developer conference, according to people familiar with the matter. They say the large screen and smart camera technology could help farflung people feel like they’re in the same room, which aligns with Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg’s mission of bringing Facebook users closer together.
