Microsoft Partners Heed Mixed-Reality Call

Microsoft on Wednesday showcased a new series of mixed reality headsets from partner firms Acer, HP, Asus, Dell and Lenovo at Computex 2017.

The preview marked the company’s commitment to establish Windows 10 as a leading driver of mixed reality capabilities, as well as to open up the market to a wider variety of price points and consumer demographics.

“These devices, coming to market this holiday, use Microsoft’s platform to enable a single and consistent user interface, standardized inputs and a universal app platform for developers,” noted Peter Han, vice president, partner devices and solutions, at Microsoft.

Apple to Invest $1B in American Manufacturing Jobs

On Wednesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that the tech company will be starting a $1 billion fund for creating advanced manufacturing jobs on American soil.

Cook didn’t disclose many details, as the fund was only announced amidst an interview with CNBC’s “Mad Money” host Jim Cramer.

The California-based company already employs 80,000 American citizens – however, Cook confidently said the initiative will create “thousands more” positions. More elaboration on the fund’s creation and the campaign’s timeline will be released incrementally during the coming summer, starting with the company’s first investment announcement near the end of May.

Apple reveals HomePod smart speaker

Apple has announced a voice-activated loudspeaker powered by its virtual assistant Siri. Like devices by Amazon and Google, Apple’s HomePod speaker can respond to questions and control smart home gadgets such as lights. Analysts say Apple has been slow to improve its Siri virtual assistant and launch a smart speaker, after Amazon launched its Echo in 2014.

The company has pitched HomePod first and foremost as a music player. “Interesting that home assistant was the last feature they talked about. Telkom enters new phase of growth

South Africa’s biggest landline provider Telkom has entered into a new phase of growth. It derived most of its revenue from its mobile business and BCX, which provides IT services to corporate customers amid tough economic climate.

The company’s operating revenue grew by 10% to R41 billion and net revenue growth of 8% to R32 billion. Telkom, in which government owns a stake of about 40%, says its headline earnings per share increased by 12.4% to R731.4 a share.

The company has been focusing on growth and has completed its turnaround plan, aimed at bringing down costs. It includes job cuts and better competing wireless operators.
